User guide
Everything you need to get the most out of OvateChat — a private, end-to-end encrypted messenger. Jump to a section below, or read straight through.
Getting started
1. Create your account
Creating an account takes three short steps. You'll need an email address you can check right now.
- Enter your email. We send a 6-digit code to confirm it's yours.
- Enter the code. If it doesn't arrive within a minute, check your spam or junk folder — and in Outlook, the Other tab. You can also go back and use a different address.
- Choose your username and display name. Your username is how friends find you and must be unique (3–30 characters: lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens or underscores). Your display name is what people see in chats, and can be anything you like.
That's it — your account is ready and you can start messaging people straight away.
2. Set your recovery phrase
Your recovery phrase is a list of words that acts as the master key to your account. It's generated on your device and never sent to us. You don't set it during sign-up, so OvateChat keeps a reminder pinned at the top of your conversation list until you do.
- Tap the reminder at the top of your chats, or go to Settings → Security → Recovery phrase.
- Write the words down, or save them in a password manager.
3. Your username
You pick your username when you sign up, and you can change it any time in Settings → Profile — as long as the new one isn't taken. People find you by username; OvateChat never uploads your phone's address book.
Adding a phone number (optional)
OvateChat doesn't need a phone number. If you want one on your account anyway — as a second way to sign in or recover access — add it in Settings → Profile and confirm it with the code we send.
Chatting with people
Add a friend
- Tap New chat (the + button on the conversations screen).
- Search for a username (or an email/phone, if that person opted in to be found that way).
- Tap Add friend → Add to send a friend request.
- Once they accept, open the chat and say hello.
If someone you haven't added messages you, it appears under Requests at the top of your conversations list — tap Accept or Decline.
Send a message
- Open a chat, type in the message box, and tap send.
- The ticks under your message show its status: one tick = sent, two grey = delivered, two blue = read.
- Long-press a message to react to it with an emoji.
Photos, files & more
Everything you attach is end-to-end encrypted and decrypted only on the recipients' devices.
- In a chat, tap the attachment button.
- Choose what to send: photo/video, a file, a voice note (hold to record), or your location (including live location for a set time).
- Add an optional caption and send.
Groups
Create a group
- Tap New chat → New group.
- Give the group a name and pick friends to add.
- Create it — group messages are encrypted just like one-to-one chats.
Manage a group
Open the group and tap its name to reach Group info, where you can:
- Rename the group, set a description, or change its photo.
- Add or remove members, and promote a member to admin or transfer admin.
- Set who can edit group info (everyone, or admins only).
- Leave the group.
Managing conversations
- Note to Self & the official OvateChat channel live in the collapsible drawer at the top of your list. Note to Self is a private, on-device space for notes and links; OvateChat is read-only product news.
- Mute or pin a chat by swiping it left (or from the chat's Contact details / More menu). Pinned chats stay at the top; muted chats stop notifying.
- Delete a chat to clear it from this device. It's a local action — the chat reappears if the other person messages you again.
- Block or remove someone from their Contact details (see below).
Your devices
Link another device
Use a one-time PIN to add a second phone or tablet:
- Install and open OvateChat on the new device and sign in — it shows a 6-digit linking PIN.
- On your primary device, go to Settings → Linked devices and enter that PIN to approve.
Only device? Recover with a code
If you've lost access to your primary device, choose "This is my only device — make it primary" during sign-in. You'll confirm with a code sent to your verified email or phone; this signs out all your other devices.
Auto-revoke idle devices
In Settings → Security → Auto-revoke idle devices you can have linked (non-primary) devices lose access automatically after a period of inactivity.
Security
Find these in Settings → Security.
- Biometric app lock — require Face ID / Touch ID / fingerprint to open the app. Your session unlocks on-device; no password is stored.
- Two-factor authentication (2FA) — require a one-time code from an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, etc.) when signing in.
- Password — add a password, change it, or switch to passwordless sign-in (codes only). With a recovery phrase you don't need a password at all.
- Recovery phrase — view or rotate it. Rotating invalidates the old phrase; store the new one safely.
- Verify safety numbers — confirm a conversation is encrypted with the right person (open a chat → tap the name → Verify Safety Number).
- Reset local data — wipe this device's local messages and keys (other devices are unaffected).
Privacy controls
In Settings → Privacy you control:
- Discoverability — whether people can find you by username (default on), or by email/phone (default off; requires a verified contact).
- Messages from non-friends — allow or require a request first.
- Read receipts — show others when you've read their messages (reciprocal: turning it off hides theirs too).
- Online status — show when you're active (also reciprocal).
Backup
In Settings → Backup you can enable an encrypted backup. It's encrypted with your own key before it leaves your device, so it's opaque to us — only your recovery credential can restore it.
Your account
Update your email or phone
In Settings, update your email or mobile number; you'll confirm the new one with a verification code.
Delete your account
- Go to Settings → Security → Delete account and confirm.
- Your account freezes immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion after a 30-day grace period.
- Changed your mind? Just sign in again within 30 days — the deletion is cancelled and you'll get a "Welcome back" note.
Sign out
Settings → Security → Sign out revokes this device's session. Your local data stays unless you also reset it.
Troubleshooting
- Notifications delayed? They're content-less wake-ups — check notification permissions and battery/background limits. Opening the app always fetches new messages, so nothing is lost.
- Calls not showing on a Samsung lock screen? On Samsung phones an incoming call is only visible on the lock screen when lock-screen notifications are shown as Cards, not Icons. Open Settings → Lock screen and AOD → Notifications and choose Cards — the call, with the caller's name and picture, is then there the moment you wake the phone, and tapping it takes you to the call. Silent mode still keeps the ring quiet, as you'd expect.
- Can't message someone? Check that you're friends (or that they allow requests from non-friends). An account that's unavailable shows as "Unavailable".
- Lost your recovery phrase? If you still have a signed-in device, view/rotate it under Security. Otherwise the account can't be recovered — see why.
- Still stuck? Email support@ovatechat.com with your device, OS and app version.
